Breast Augmentation/
Augmentation Mammaplasty

  • Breast augmentation is usually done to balance a difference in breast size, to improve body contour, or as a reconstructive technique following surgery.

  • Incisions are made to keep scars as inconspicuous as possible, in the breast crease, around the nipple, or in the armpit. Breast tissue and skin is lifted to create a pocket for each implant.

  • The breast implant may be inserted directly under the breast tissue or beneath the chest wall muscle.

  • After surgery, breasts appear fuller and more natural in tone and contour. Scars will fade with time.

What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation ("augmentation mammaplasty") is a procedure performed to surgically enhance the size and/or shape of the breasts for the following reasons:

  • To enhance the body contour (by changing the breast size with breast implants)
  • To correct volume due to breast reduction from pregnancy
  • Provide better breast symmetry
  • Reconstruct the breasts post-breast surgery (i.e., breasts being surgically removed during breast cancer surgery, a "mastectomy")

A good candidate for this type of procedure is someone who:

  • Is looking for improvement, not perfection
  • Has realistic expectations and goals
  • Wants to enhance her appearance

In order to increase the breast size, the plastic surgeon will likely have to use breasts implants.

There are two types of breast implants to choose from:

  • Silicone gel filled implants: Silicone shell filled with a silicone gel solution
  • Saline filled implants: Silicone shell with a saline (salt water) solution

In addition, you will have to decide on an incision type:

  • Crease where the breast meets the chest
  • Around the areola
  • Through the armpit

All surgical procedures carry some uncertainty and risks, the following are risks associated with breast augmentation:

  • Capsular contracture (the capsule around the implant begins to tighten)
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Swelling and pain
  • Implant may get an infection (this occurs in a small percentage of women)
  • Loss of nipple sensation
  • Breakage and/or leakage of implants

During an initial consultation at the Women's Institute of Cosmetic & Laser Surgery, a qualified surgeon can further discuss the risks involved with this procedure.

What to expect during an initial consultation:

During this, a surgeon of our practice will evaluate your health; discuss which surgical options are appropriate for you by the analysis of your skin tone and condition of your breasts. The surgeon will discuss your expectations and goals, the risks and complications that may arise, explain what to expect before, after, and during surgery, and what precautions to take pre-surgery and post-surgery (i.e., no smoking, taking certain medications, etc.)

How breast augmentation is performed:

Depending on what your plastic surgeon decides is best for you, the surgery may be performed either in an office-based facility, free-standing surgery center, or a hospital outpatient facility.

You will be given a general anesthetic, which will keep you asleep during the entire surgery. Depending on the incision location you chose, the plastic surgeon will proceed to make an incision in the selected area. Through the incision, a surgeon will lift your breast tissue and insert the implant either behind the breast tissue or underneath the muscle wall. The incision is then stitched up once the implant is correctly placed. The surgery takes about one to two hours.

After surgery:

You may feel tired or sore after surgery, but you will be back to regular activity within 24 to 48 hours, although you may still experience some soreness and discomfort. You will be able to return to work after a few days (depending on the conditions associated with work facilities).
