Breast Reduction/
Reduction Mammaplasty

  • BreastReduction
Heavy breasts can lead to physical discomfort, a variety of medical problems, shoulder indentations due to tight bra straps, and extreme self-consciousness.
  • BreastReduction
Incisions outline the area of skin, breast tissue, and fat to be removed and the new position for the nipple.
  • BreastReduction
Skin formerly located above the nipple is brought down and together to reshape the breast. Sutures close the incisions, giving the breast it's new contour.
  • BreastReduction
Scars around the areola, below it, and in the crease under the breast are permanent, but can be easily concealed by clothing.
  • BreastReduction
With smaller, better proportioned breasts, you'll feel more comfortable and your clothes will fit better.

What is a breast reduction?

A breast reduction ("reduction mammaplasty") is intended for women who have overly- large breasts and have experienced medical problems due to this condition. Heavy, pendulous breasts can cause back pain, skin irritation, skeletal deformities, and in some cases, breathing problems. Breast reduction removes fat and glandular tissue, making the breasts smaller and lighter. The size of the areola (the skin around the nipple) can also be reduced during this procedure.

A good candidate for breast reduction is a woman who:

  • Wants physical relief, as opposed to cosmetic improvement
  • Has large and sagging breasts that restrict her from certain activities
  • Is in good physical health
  • Has realistic goals and expectations

To find out if breast reduction is something that suits your condition, schedule a consultation at the Women's Institute of Cosmetic & Laser Surgery for an evaluation.

Risks and uncertainties of breast reduction:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Reaction to anesthesia
  • Soreness around the nipples
  • Permanent scarring
  • Mismatched breasts or un-proportioned nipples
  • Permanent loss of feeling in nipples or breasts

What to expect during your consultation:

During your consultation, you will have the opportunity to discuss in detail the procedure, risks, benefits, results, and your expectations. One of our qualified surgeons will examine your breasts, possibly photograph, and discuss the variables that affect you in particular. This is an opportunity to get all of your questions answered about the procedure.

How breast reduction is performed:

Before surgery, a mammogram will be performed. You will receive specific instructions on eating drinking, smoking, etc. before the day of surgery.

The procedure can be performed as an outpatient procedure. You will be given a general anesthetic.

Depending on what you and our plastic surgeon discusses, different types of techniques can be performed. In most cases, an anchor-shaped incision is made around the areola that follows the natural curve of the breasts. The surgeon will remove glandular tissue, fat, and excess skin. The nipple will be moved to a new position. In some instances, liposuction ("lipoplasty") is utilized in the armpit area during this procedure. The incision is stitched up around the areola in a vertical line extending downward.

After surgery:

You will be wrapped with an elastic bandage after surgery. You may feel pain and discomfort the first couple of days. To alleviate some of the pain, the doctor will prescribe pain medication. The bandages are removed within a couple days after surgery. After about a day or two, you may be able to move around like normal, but you cannot resume normal activity until three to four weeks after surgery. For final results, it can take six months to a year before your breasts settle into their new shape.
