Surgery of the Nose - Rhinoplasty

  • Rhinoplasty
Before surgery, these rhinoplasty patients have large, slightly hanging noses, with a hump and an enlarged tip.
  • Rhinoplasty
If your nostrils are too wide, the surgeon can remove small wedges of skin form their base, bringing them closer together.
  • Rhinoplasty
Incisions are made inside the nostrils or at the base of the nose, providing access to the cartilage and bone, which can then be sculpted into shape.

In order to reshape the nose, a qualified surgeon of the Women's Institute of Cosmetic & Laser Surgery can perform rhinoplasty ("nose surgery") - one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures among both men and women.

What can rhinoplasty do?

  • Reduce or increase the size of the nose
  • Change the shape of the tip or the bridge of the nose
  • Narrow the span of the nostrils
  • Change the angle between the nose and the upper lip

Who is a good candidate for rhinoplasty?

  • Someone who has realistic goals and expectations
  • Someone who is looking for improvement, not perfection
  • Someone who has completed his/her growth spurt (usually around 14 or 15 years of age)

Uncertainties and risks of rhinoplasty:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Complications
  • Temporary change in airway dynamics

During an initial consultation with one of our doctors, the two of you can further discuss the various factors involved with rhinoplasty.

What to expect during a consultation:

During your consultation at the Women's Institute of Cosmetic & Laser Surgery, a plastic surgeon will also discuss your expectations and goals for this procedure, the risks involved, and what to expect as the final result. She may ask you what you want your nose to look like, and evaluate the structure of your nose and face. The doctor will describe in detail the anesthesia pre-operative and post-operative expectations and financial ramifications of the procedure.

How is rhinoplasty performed?

The procedure will be performed under local or general anesthesia. Rhinoplasty will take anywhere between one to two hours. The surgeon will separate the nose from the cartilage and the bone in order to reshape it into what you desire. Most incisions during rhinoplasty are made inside the nose, inside the nostrils, so scarring is not visible. This is known as a "closed" rhinoplasty. When the case is more complicated, "open" rhinoplasty may be performed; with a small incision made on the columella (the vertical strip of tissue separating the nostrils).

Once the nose is reshaped in the desired position, one of our cosmetic surgeons will then redrape the skin over the new framework. A splint is used on the nose to help it maintain its new shape.

After surgery

During the first 24 hours, your face will be puffy and sore. A pain medication will be prescribed to alleviate pain. You will need to sleep with your head elevated on 2-3 pillows, for approximately 1 week after surgery. Swelling and bruising may occur two or three days after surgery, which should disappear after a couple weeks. Depending on the person, it can take several weeks before you can resume to regular activity. Because healing is a slow and gradual process, final results may not appear until a year or so after the surgery has been performed.
